Antonio Damasio challenges traditional ideas about emotions and rationality. Science, even modern neuroscience, has tended to concentrate on the cognitive aspects of brain functions, overlooking emotions as the source of a person’s true brain.
View Antonio Damasios talk about the role of emotions (via youtube, part 1 and part 2, video describtion in English, translated by google from spanish).
Maybe “Cogito ergo sum” (”I think, therefore I am”) should be replaced by ” I feel, therefore I am”…
Researchers are developing a computer system, the “Chatter Box”, that mimics the brains centre of speech and language. The Chatter Box will be based on biological principles and will be able to perform complex functions such as reading and comprehending.

Remember how research in artificial intelligence shows that intelligence can not be viewed in isolation without being embedded in a body (see New AI: Embodied Intelligence)? Research in cognition shows how entangled the body and brain are. Our body has an important role in how we perceive, think and remember.
Art Glenberg explains in this interview (via Brain Science Podcast) how higher cognitive abilities are shaped by the perceptual and motor abilities of our bodies.
Perhaps, it is required for a computational device (be it brain or computer) to be embedded in a body, to acquire intelligence?
